George Lovell, a collier at Oakdale, second son of William and Lydia Lovell of 20 Beech Grove, Oakdale arrived in France in November 1914 in the 2nd Battalion Monmouth Regiment.

On 13 May 1915, Lance Corporal Lovell was killed in action—a day marked by ceaseless rain and crushing German shelling during the 2nd Battle of Ypres. His battalion, part of 12th Brigade, was in reserve at Shell Trap Farm near the Frezenberg Ridge. German attacks resulted in fierce fighting with great loss of life, but with little change in the frontlines.
Lance Corporal G Lovell (1883) was killed in action on 13 May 1915, aged 23. He lies in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France. He is commemorated also on the Battalion Memorial in St Cadoc's Church, Trevethin, and on the 'H' Company Memorial, formerly in the now defunct St Mary's Church, Crumlin.
