George Wiltshire, born in Bristol, a collier at Oakdale, was the husband of Polly. He served in the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery (RFA), and arrived in France in October 1915. In early 1918 he was in the 55th Division in the divisional ammunition column, RFA. In March the division was in the front line at Givenchy and Festubert east of Béthune and, facing strong enemy raids during the German Spring Offensive, made a courageous stand.
Gunner G Wiltshire (97039) was killed in action 28 March 1918, aged 26, and is buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France, a frontline cemetery. He is also commemorated on the Abertillery War Memorial and on the St Michael's Church War Memorial, Abertillery.
Additional information taken from the Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929: George's wife Polly received pay of £4 15s 11d and a gratuity of £16 10s. Omission Historical Note: *His name does not appear on the physical Oakdale Memorial.
